FEU

Forty-foot equivalent unit, a standard size intermodal container. FEU can be used for many applications, such as:

  • to measure the space available for containers,
  • to calculate port fees,
  • to standardize the size of containers for transport.

The carriers in the United States emphasize the FEU whereas in other parts of the world the TEU, “twenty-foot equivalent unit” is more accepted.

However, there are different types of FEUs, such as:

  • The Standard FEU: This container is the most common type of FEU and has a capacity of 2,360 cubic feet (67 m3).
  • The High Cube FEU: This type of FEU is 9.5 feet (2.9 m) tall, which is one foot (0.3 m) taller than a Standard FEU.
  • The Reefer FEU: This type of FEU is used to transport perishable goods and has a built-in refrigeration unit.

Therefore, the FEU is an important unit in logistics because it allows for the standardization of container sizes, which makes transport simpler and more efficient.
