American Society of Transportation & Logistics

Until 2015, The American Society of Transportation & Logistics (AST&L) was the largest, most influential and most representative professional society in North America dedicated to transportation and logistics. With more than 5,000 members, AST&L represented all modes of transportation and all aspects of supply chain management from warehousing to finished goods.

AST&L helped members keep pace with rapidly changing technology and business practices through education, research and standards development. The society also provides its members with opportunities for networking and sharing best practices, as well as advocating on behalf of the industry before Congress, regulatory agencies and the media.

In recent years AST&L changed its mission statement and its focus to include education and training, research and standards development, and other value-added services such as publications (books, monographs, periodicals), annual conferences, seminars and online technical support.

The American Society of Transportation & Logistics was divided into two main components: the national office in Alexandria, Virginia; and regions across North America. National AST&L provided educational programs for members at all levels – from student membership through advanced degrees – and conducted public awareness activities throughout the year aimed at increasing understanding about the importance of transportation to an efficient economy.

On a local level AST&L regional affiliates provided information on legislation affecting transportation policy, education opportunities for students and professionals, updates on regulatory issues, and news from industry organizations.

In 2015, American Society of Transportation and Logistics merged with APICS. With over 2 million active supply chain practitioners worldwide as well as over 100 years of combined expertise from its former member organizations, APICS serves professionals in every facet of the supply chain field. APICS are the certification programs of the Association for Supply Chain Management.
