Owner/Operator
An Owner/Operator is an individual who owns and operates their own tractor and trailer. They are typically responsible for their own business expenses, such as:
- fuel,
- maintenance,
- and insurance.
Owner/Operators usually contract with larger trucking companies to haul freight on a per-load basis. This arrangement can provide flexibility and independence for the Owner/Operator, but it also comes with some risks. For example, if demand for freight shipments drops, the Owner/Operator may have difficulty finding work. As a result, owners/operators must carefully manage their business finances to ensure they can weather tough times.
Owner/Operator can be a good career choice for experienced truck drivers who are looking for more flexibility and control over their work. If you’re thinking of becoming an Owner/Operator, be sure to do your research to ensure you understand the risks and rewards of this career path.
