Automated Storage/Retrieval System (AS/RS)

A high-density rack inventory storage system with unmanned vehicles automatically loading and unloading products to/from the racks.

An automated storage/retrieval system (AS/RS) is a type of warehouse management system that uses machines to move goods around instead of people. AS/RS systems are often used in warehouses and distribution centers to speed up the process of getting products in and out. They work by having a machine called a robot or AGV (automated guided vehicle) that travels along a track, picking up or dropping off goods as needed.

When items are removed from an AS/RS, they are brought to a picking station where there is a person who will look for the item in question. The worker then places that product into packaging before sending it out to its final destination. If there are multiple orders for the same item, or if the load being shipped is too large to be picked all at once, the worker will have to return to the AS/RS when it is time for that item again. In small warehouses, there may be a fixed station in the AS/RS from which workers can pick and pack items. Larger facilities may have multiple stations, allowing different groups of materials to be processed simultaneously.

The benefit of using AS/RS for both workers and employers is that a well-oiled system can increase efficiency. Goods move in and out quickly, so there is less time wasted waiting around for the next available worker. The down side, however, is that it takes a lot of effort to maintain an automated system properly. There are many more moving parts that can break down, so it is important to use high-quality equipment. Although the initial cost of buying one is usually higher than a traditional system, many companies have found that they are able to save money in the long term because their employees don’t have to work as hard.

AS/RS systems are still fairly young, but companies continue to experiment with different ways of using them. There are systems that allow the drive mechanism to be used as a sort of crane or assembly line; some can even handle pallets and move containers in a continuous loop. As they become more common in warehouses all over the world, designers will find new and efficient uses for AS/RS.
