Exporter Identification Number (EIN)

An Exporter Identification Number is a number required for the exporter on the Shipper’s Export Declaration. A corporation may use their Federal Employer Identification Number as issued by the IRS; individuals can use their Social Security Numbers.

An Exporter Identification Number is also sometimes called a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). The Exporter Identification Number is used to identify the exporter for customs purposes. It is also used to track shipments and ensure that the proper documentation is filed.

An Exporter Identification Number includes:

  • The exporter’s name and address.
  • The country of export.
  • The Harmonized System (HS) commodity codes for the goods being exported.
  • The value of the shipment.
  • The export license number (if required).
  • The U.S. Census Bureau will assign an Exporter Identification Number to your business if you do not have one already.

The Exporter Identification Number can be obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau. You can apply for an Exporter Identification Number online or by mail.
