International Air Transport Association
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is an international trade association of airlines. Its member airlines include major international carriers as well as smaller regional airlines. IATA’s role is to represent, lead and serve the airline industry. It also works with other aviation stakeholders, including:
- airports,
- air traffic controllers,
- governments, to improve aviation safety and efficiency.
In addition to its advocacy work, IATA provides a number of services to its member airlines. These include developing industry-wide standards and best practices, providing training and support on a range of topics such as safety, security, and the environment, and managing the settlement of accounts between airlines. IATA also operates two global passenger reservation systems – Amadeus and Sabre – which account for a combined market share of 70%.
IATA’s work in the area of logistics is focused on two key areas:
- Air cargo. IATA works with its member airlines to improve the efficiency of the air cargo supply chain. This includes developing industry-wide standards and best practices, as well as working with other stakeholders such as airports, ground handlers, and trucking companies to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
- Passenger travel. IATA develops standards and best practices for the smooth running of passenger travel, from booking a flight to making an insurance claim. It also provides training and support to airlines on a range of topics such as customer service, sales, and marketing. In addition, IATA operates two global passenger reservation systems – Amadeus and Sabre – which account for a combined market share of 70%.
