Picking

Picking is the process of retrieving products from storage to fill customer orders. This can be done:

  • manually,
  • using a pick list,
  • or automatically with the help of robots or other automated systems.

There are several different types of picking methods that can be used, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common picking methods are:

  1. Batch picking is the process of filling multiple orders at the same time. This method is typically used when there are a large number of orders to be filled and/or when the products needed for those orders are located in close proximity to one another. The main advantage of batch picking is that it can be very efficient, especially when compared to other methods like a wave or zone picking.
  2. Wave picking is the process of filling orders in groups or waves. This method is typically used when there are a large number of orders to be filled and/or when the products needed for those orders are located in close proximity to one another. The main advantage of wave picking is that it can be very efficient, especially when compared to other methods like batch or zone picking.
  3. Zone picking is the process of dividing the warehouse into zones and assigning each order to a specific zone. This method is typically used when there are a large number of orders to be filled and/or when the products needed for those orders are located in close proximity to one another. The main advantage of zone picking is that it can be very efficient, especially when compared to other methods like batch or wave picking.

Picking is a key part of the order fulfillment process and can have a major impact on a company’s bottom line.
